After the season he briefly entered the transfer portal following the departure of head coach Marvin Menzies, but returned to the program after meeting with new head coach T. J. Otzelberger.

His sophomore year marked a major turning point. Hamilton erupted during conference play, highlighted by a 35-point performance in a 99–78 win over New Mexico on January 18, 2020, and a 29-point, 10-rebound outing against No. 4 San Diego State eight days later. Hamilton elevated his production again as a junior, posting 17.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while earning Second-Team All-Mountain West honors. He entered the transfer portal following the season but ultimately chose to return for his senior year.

On January 28, 2022, he poured in a career-high 45 points in an 88–74 win over Colorado State—one of the top single-game performances in the Mountain West that year. He averaged 21.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists across the season and earned First-Team All-Mountain West recognition for the second time.
