International POTW: Aleks Maric 14/5/12

Aussie Hoopla International Player of the Week

Aleks Maric

Each week the AussieHoopla.com Player of the Week award goes to the Aussie who has had the greatest impact both on the stat sheet and their teams record.  This weeks winner is….

Hometown: Sydney, NSW

Current Team: Panathinaikos (Greece –  Greek Cup, Eurocup)

Former Teams: Nebraska (NCAA), KK Partizan (Eurocup)

Aleks Maric is coming into some fine form prior to the Australian Boomers Olympic campaign. Although Maric was unable to deliver the victory for Panathinaikos he delivered a double-double in his last game of the season scoring 13 points and getting 11 rebounds in only 15 minutes on the court. Panathinaikos (22-2)  lost to fellow Aussie Joe Ingles and his Regal FC Barcelona (29-5) team 69-74 in the Euroleague Final Four. Maric Maric averaged 3.8ppg, 2.6rpg for the season with Panathinaikos.

In their 77-71 victory over 12th-ranked Assignia Manresa (15-19)  in the Spanish ACB, Ingles had 10 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Daniel Kickert

Hometown: Kew, VIC

Current Team: PGE Turow (Spain –  ACB)

Former Teams: St Mary’s (NCAA), Gran Canaria (Spain – ACB),  CB Breogán (Spain – LEB)

As Daniel Kickert hopes to make his first Australian Olympic team he certainly isn’t doing himself any damage with great performances like this during his stay in Poland. Kickert has been a huge contributor to the team this season and as PGE Turow (2-8) won 98-94 against second-ranked Trefl Sopot (6-4) he recorded 19 points in 33 minutes. The Polish league has only just begun but will have to miss Kickert’s performances when he soon takes time off for Olympics trainings shortly. Kickert has great stats so far this year, averaging 14.9ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.1apg.

Steven Markovic

Hometown: Sydney, NSW

Current Team: Radnički Kragujevac (Serbia –  Serbian/Adriatic League)

Former Teams: West Sydney Razorbacks (NBL), Crvena Zvezda (Euroleague)

This was not the typical performance we’d have here for our International Player of the Week, however with the majority of the European teams into their offseasons and many Aussie’s on their way back home due for Boomer’s try outs, there aren’t as many active Aussies playing right now. But no disrespect to Steven Markovic who had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in his team Radnicki Kragujevac (4-7) loss to powerhouse Partizan (9-2) 82-76. Markovic is a talked do-it-all player who is always on the Boomers radar. Expect to hear him mentioned more here in our POTW section. Markovic currently averages 7.8ppg, 1.5rpg and 3.9apg.

  • Why Newcastle’s NBL Return Is Closer Than You Think

The conversation around NBL expansion has intensified in recent years, with the league publicly confirming discussions with potential markets such as Canberra, the Gold Coast, and Darwin. However, one city that continues to quietly build momentum as a realistic candidate for a future franchise is Newcastle. While it may not always dominate the expansion headlines, the pieces required for an NBL return are slowly aligning, and according to former owner of the Illawarra Hawks, Dorry Kordahi, the push for a Newcastle team is very real.…

Most 16-year-olds would take the bag. Luke Paul wants to take a beating. In an era where high school recruits are chasing six-figure Instagram followings and seven-figure NIL deals, Luke Paul just did the unthinkable. The 16-year-old Australian talent is a 6'6" point guard widely tipped as a future NBA lottery pick who reportedly turned down US college offers worth up to $3 million to stay home. With one game remaining in the regular season and finals seeding on the line, South East Melbourne moved a step closer to the top two with a 120–104 win over the Tasmania JackJumpers at John Cain Arena. The Phoenix overcame a career-high 36-point outing from Majok Deng, with Angus Glover leading the way with 21 points and seven three-pointers as the home side’s firepower proved too much. Despite the result, coach Josh King said his group still needs to produce a complete four-quarter performance, particularly…

In recent weeks, NBL Pride Round has been accompanied by a wave of opinion pieces — including Michael Randall’s “Pride Round: Why the NBL should be proud it won’t ever ‘shut up and dribble’” — praising the initiative while dismissing its critics. This has been something I’ve been thinking about and discussing with people since Indigenous Round.I think we all need a little perspective sometimes. https://t.co/2D65bvtS5K — Michael Randall (@MickRandallHS) February 3, 2026 But the argument that any criticism of the National Basketball League’s social-issue…

  • Japan’s Emergence as a Major Destination for Australian Basketball Talent

Five to ten years ago, if an Australian headed to Japan, it was typically because of not making NBL roster spots. Players like Venky Jois, Daniel Dillon and Rhys Vague fit this profile. Now Australian basketballers looking to play overseas rarely viewed Japan as a serious career destination. The traditional pathways pointed elsewhere, but that perception has shifted rapidly. Today, Japan’s B.League has emerged as a legitimate and increasingly attractive option for Australian players seeking strong contracts, defined roles, and long-term professional stability.Today, that narrative…
