BIO: Jae’Sean Tate was born in Pickerington, Ohio (USA). Tate is the oldest son of Jermaine Tate, who played basketball at Ohio State in 1996/97 before transferring to Cincinnati and played professionally overseas. His mother, Cori Key, was stabbed to death by her boyfriend Damiene Boles on July 31, 2004. Boles was convicted of the murder three years later. After his mother’s death, Tate was raised by his father and stepmom Jenice alongside their three children. Tate went through anger management to process his emotions and has a tattoo of a key on his leg.

Tate attended Pickerington High School Central, where he excelled at basketball and football. He played defensive end and tight end before a shoulder injury cut his junior season short, and he focused on basketball from then on.

On the hardwood, Tate was a teammate of Caris LeVert and made the game-winning tip-in in a playoff win over Columbus Marion-Franklin as a freshman.

As a sophomore, his team went 26–2 and won the 2012 Division I championship defeating Toledo Witmer in the final game.

Both junior and senior year Tate went on to be a first team conference player and senior year was co-player of the year in the OCC.

He injured his shoulder as a junior, shortening his season, but still averaged 22.3 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists per game. Tate ended his high school career as the number 1 ranked player in Ohio and the 15th ranked forward in the nation in the ESPN top 100.

COLLEGE

Jae’Sean Tate played four collegiate seasons at Ohio State from 2014–15 through 2017–18, developing from a versatile role player into one of the most reliable two-way contributors in the Big Ten Conference.

A Detroit native, Tate entered Ohio State with the option to pursue either basketball or American football at the college level, ultimately choosing basketball and joining the Buckeyes during the 2014–15 season as a freshman small forward.

As a freshman in 2014–15, Tate appeared in 36 games with 10 starts and averaged 4.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, contributing immediately as a physical defender and rebounder while helping Ohio State reach the NCAA Tournament’s second round.

During his sophomore season in 2015–16, Tate’s role expanded as he played in 31 games with 27 starts, averaging 8.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while ranking among the team leaders in rebounds and defensive assignments across multiple positions.

Tate continued his upward trajectory as a junior in 2016–17, starting 31 of 32 games and averaging 11.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, while becoming one of the Buckeyes’ primary scorers in conference play and logging heavy minutes against top Big Ten opponents.

In his senior season in 2017–18, Tate produced career-best numbers, starting all 33 games and averaging 12.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting over 54 percent from the field, one of the best marks among Big Ten wings.

That 2017–18 campaign earned Tate All-Big Ten Conference Second Team honours, recognizing his impact as a consistent scorer, elite rebounder for his position, and defensive anchor for Ohio State.

Across his four-year career, Tate appeared in 132 games with 101 starts, finishing with 1,120 career points and 677 rebounds, ranking among Ohio State’s top rebounders of the modern era for a perimeter forward.

Tate was especially effective in rivalry and high-leverage games, recording multiple double-doubles in Big Ten play and regularly guarding the opposing team’s top scoring threat regardless of position.

His college career concluded in 2018 with Tate firmly established as a physically imposing, high-IQ wing whose versatility, rebounding, and toughness defined Ohio State’s identity during his final two seasons in Columbus.
