NBL EXPERIENCE

Marlon Redmond made his NBL debut with the Illawarra Hawks at 29 years of age. He scored 45 points in his first game.

After a one-season stint with the Sydney Supersonics, Gordie McLeod returned to Illawarra and reclaimed the captaincy under Charlie Ammit, the first Hawks coach to be retained for consecutive seasons.

With former MVP Michael Jones heading overseas and not returning for a third year, the club reshaped its frontline by bringing in American seven-footer David McGuire to join returning import Jerry Steurer, who came back for a second season. Wing and depth roles were also retooled, with Rick Fowle and Michael Roodenrys arriving to cover the departures of Simon Cottrell (to Hobart) and Brett Flanigan (to Sydney), while Illawarra leaned on a stronger local core heading into what would become a landmark season for the franchise.

Marlon Redmond played one season in the NBL. He averaged 29.1 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 15 NBL games.

That 1974-75 San Francisco team went 19-7 overall and 9-5 in the WCAC for second place under coach Bob Gaillard, and Redmond’s breakout season earned him First Team All-WCAC honours as he became one of the league’s top rebounders and scorers.

During the 1975 Cable Car Classic, San Francisco beat Oral Roberts 98-76 and then defeated Providence 91-71 in the championship game, with Redmond scoring nine straight points in the title-game second half and earning all-tournament selection alongside teammates Winford Boynes and James Hardy.

That senior team opened the year ranked No. 11 nationally, won its first 13 games including the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii, rose to No. 1 in the country, and Redmond remained one of the side’s key two-way veterans during the run.

He also delivered notable scoring bursts during that period, including a 23-point effort in a comeback win over Cal State Fullerton in which 21 of his points came in the second half.

After the 1976-77 season, Redmond received Second Team All-Northern California, Second Team All-WCAC and Honorable Mention United Press International All-Pacific Coast recognition.

Across his four-year San Francisco career, Redmond played 86 games and averaged 15.2 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists while posting a 48.1 field-goal percentage and a 78.2 free-throw percentage.

He finished his college career with 1,308 points and 686 rebounds, totals that placed him 19th on San Francisco’s all-time scoring list and among the program’s leading career rebounders, while his 561 made field goals also ranked high in school history.

Redmond closed out his USF career as a three-time All-WCAC selection, with First Team honours in 1974-75 and Second Team honours in both 1975-76 and 1976-77.
