BIO: Born in Cooma, New South Wales, Jeffrey Dowdell is a product of the Shoalhaven Tigers basketball program which has produced several NBL, WNBL, and NCAA players including his brother Ben who spent 2007–2011 attending Santa Clara University and playing for the Santa Clara Broncos.
Dowdell received a scholarship to attend the Australian Institute of Sport (Canberra) in 2004. He spent two years year there and played for the program’s state league team (2004, 2005).
Jeff Dowdell made his NBL debut with the Perth Wildcats at 18 years of age. He scored five points in his first game.
In 2005, Dowdell played his rookie NBL season with the Perth Wildcats at the age of 18, the same year he was named as NSW Junior Player of the Year.
In his second NBL season with the Wildcats, he was named the club’s Most Improved Player in a season where he established himself as a regular part of the Wildcat’s rotation.
Jeff Dowdell played seven seasons across four NBL teams. This included the Perth Wildcats, Townsville Crocodiles, Adelaide 36ers and Cairns Taipans. He averaged 4.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.6 assists in 196 NBL games.

Dowdell joined the Australian Institute of Sport for the 2004 SEABL season, entering the state league pathway as a Cooma-born forward born on 13 March 1987 and appearing in an AIS men’s group that included Aron Baynes, Thomas Garlepp, Adam Gibson, Nathan Jawai, Brad Newley, Lucas Walker and Stephen Weigh.
Dowdell remained with the Australian Institute of Sport for the 2005 SEABL season and was named NSW Junior Player of the Year that year, while the AIS roster also included Joe Ingles, Nathan Jawai, Patrick Mills, Andrew Ogilvy, Stephen Weigh and Jess Wagstaff.
Dowdell joined Albury Wodonga for the 2006 SEABL season and averaged 24.9 points and 8.59 rebounds per game, finishing second in East Conference scoring, ninth in rebounding and earning selection in the All-SEABL East Team.
Dowdell joined Wanneroo for the 2007 WA State Basketball League season and averaged 27.5 points per game, earning SBL All-Star Second Team selection while the Wolves finished ninth with a 10–14 record.
Dowdell stayed with Wanneroo for the 2008 WA State Basketball League season and was named to the SBL All-Star First Team, while also winning the Wolves’ Most Valuable Player award as Wanneroo finished sixth at 17–9 and lost its quarter-final series to Goldfields 2–0 after scores of 123–101 and 130–107.
Dowdell completed his Wanneroo stint in the 2009 WA State Basketball League season and won the club’s Most Valuable Player award for a second straight year, with the Wolves finishing third on the men’s ladder at 18–8.
Dowdell joined North-West Tasmania for the 2010 SEABL season and helped the Thunder finish with a 13–9 record, earning SEABL Australian Youth Player of the Year honours.
Dowdell joined West Adelaide for the 2011 SA State League season and averaged 21.7 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game, with the Bearcats finishing fourth and losing in the semi-finals before he was named the club’s Most Valuable Player and Bearcat Medal winner.
Dowdell joined Canberra for the 2013 SEABL season after a hip-related break from basketball and played for the Gunners in an 8–20 campaign that ended sixth in the East Conference, earning the club’s Most Valuable Player award.
Dowdell joined Queanbeyan for the 2015 Waratah League Division 1 season and was named to the league’s All-Star Five.
