INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Chile - Provincial Llanquihue (2003) | Philippines - Red Bull Energizers Thunder (2000)

Name: Delaney, Thaddeous | college: College of Charleston (1993-1997) Graduated prior to: 1998| Additional Info: Delaney suited up for the College of Charleston during the 1993-94 season under legendary head coach John Kresse and competed through 1996-97, anchoring one of the most successful four-year stretches in program history as the Cougars transitioned into NCAA Division I prominence.

As a freshman in 1993-94, Delaney appeared in 29 games and averaged 6.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while shooting 54.8% from the field, helping the Cougars post a 25-4 overall record and capture the Trans America Athletic Conference regular season title in their first year of Division I eligibility.

In 1994-95, he elevated his production to 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game across 30 appearances, recording 11 double-doubles while shooting 57.1% from the floor, as Charleston finished 22-7 overall, secured the TAAC Tournament championship, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament where Delaney delivered 16 points and 12 rebounds in a first-round matchup against Wake Forest.

During that NCAA contest, he battled Wake Forest center Tim Duncan, producing a physical interior performance despite the Cougars’ loss, and he added 14 points and eight rebounds in a later NCAA Tournament meeting against Duncan as Charleston again faced top-tier national competition.

As a junior in 1995-96, Delaney averaged 15.4 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, ranking seventh nationally in rebounding average while shooting 59.3% from the field, and he recorded 17 double-doubles during the season as the Cougars compiled a 25-6 record, claimed another TAAC championship, and advanced to postseason play with an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament.

His 1995-96 campaign earned him TAAC Player of the Year honors along with All-TAAC First Team recognition, and he was named TAAC Player of the Week three times while also collecting TAAC All-Tournament accolades during conference championship play.

In his senior season of 1996-97, Delaney averaged 19.5 points and 11.6 rebounds per game over 32 contests while shooting 58.0% from the field, guiding Charleston to a 29-3 overall record and a No. 16 national ranking in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll, with the Cougars’ only three losses coming against eventual 1997 national champion Arizona, NCAA runner-up Kentucky, and Oklahoma State.

During that senior campaign, he recorded 19 double-doubles and capped his collegiate career with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the NCAA Second Round against Arizona, marking his 51st career double-double and reinforcing his reputation for performing against elite competition.

Affectionately nicknamed “The Shaq of the TAAC,” Delaney was a dominant player for the men’s basketball team from 1994-97 and consistently delivered his strongest performances against the nation’s top programs, as he concluded his career ranked fifth all-time in school history with 1,564 career points, which stands as second all-time in College of Charleston’s NCAA Division I history, and second all-time in career rebounds with 1,119, the top mark in TAAC history at the time of his graduation.

Across his four-year career, the Cougars amassed a 101-17 overall record with four TAAC championships, two NIT appearances, and two NCAA Tournament berths, and Delaney finished with career averages of 13.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while earning three All-TAAC First Team selections and cementing his legacy as one of the program’s most productive interior players of the 1990s.
