Cannan joined Goldfields for the 2005 Western Australian Basketball League season and scored 16 points in an 83–72 win over Perth Redbacks.

Cannan joined Dandenong for the 2005 Big V season after his Goldfields stint, with Dandenong adding him and Brent Hobba to a senior group that also included Lester Strong, Adrian Campbell, Mark Roberts, Russell Cranston, David Godfrey, Jeremy Kirtley and Chris Law.

He continued with the Dandenong Rangers in 2006 where he averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds per game, including a 29 rebound night against the Eltham Wildcats.

Dandenong reached the 2006 ABA National Finals where Cannan scored 18 points in a 110–98 win over Forestville, then finished with 21 points and 19 rebounds in a 94–80 grand final loss to Geelong and was named ABA National Grand Final MVP and an ABA National Men’s All-Star.

Cannan remained with Dandenong in 2007 where the Rangers reached the Australian Club Championships grand final before losing 110–98 to Cairns, and he was named in the men’s All-Star Five alongside Aaron Grabau, Nathan Jawai, Scott Cook and Brent Hobba.

His Dandenong stint continued through 2008, when he remained part of the Rangers senior men’s program and earned another ABA all-star selection.

Cannan joined Southern Districts for the 2009 state-league season, with the Brisbane-based Spartans stint later carrying all-star honours in 2009–2010.

He remained with Southern Districts in 2011 where the Spartans finished 10–16 during the season alongside Cortez Groves.

COLLEGE

During the 2004–05 season, Cannan was an All-RMAC Honorable Mention selection, matching CCU teammate Brent Hobba’s All-RMAC recognition era (Hobba was 2nd-Team All-RMAC in 2004 and 2005), and that same period placed both players prominently in CCU’s record book across career and single-season categories.

Across his CCU career (2001–05), Cannan finished with a .569 career field-goal percentage, which ranks 5th in CCU men’s basketball history, and he totaled 505 career rebounds, also ranking 5th in school history in the career rebounds list.

Cannan also produced two of the top single-season field-goal percentage marks in program history, shooting .634 in 2003–04 (ranked 4th on CCU’s single-season field-goal percentage list) and .626 in 2004–05 (ranked 5th).

In a documented early-season box score from November 30, 2001, Cannan recorded 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting with 10 total rebounds (5 offensive, 5 defensive), plus 2 assists and 5 steals in 24 minutes for Colorado Christian, reflecting his immediate statistical impact during the 2001–02 campaign timeline.

Another early-season box score from November 10, 2001 shows Cannan going 1-for-7 from the field and 3-for-6 at the foul line for 5 points, adding 6 total rebounds (3 offensive, 3 defensive) in 17 minutes, in a game that also included Brent Hobba in the same Colorado Christian rotation.

In a January 10, 2004 conference game entry, Cannan logged 12 minutes and scored 8 points on 3-for-6 shooting and 2-for-2 free throws, with 6 total rebounds and 1 turnover, in a contest where Colorado Christian totaled 84 points and where Hobba also appeared in the scoring summary for CCU.

Cannan attended Colorado Christian University alongside South Dragons teammate Brent Hobba.
