NBL EXPERIENCE

Tony Tolovae made his NBL debut with the Illawarra Hawks at 22 years of age. He went scoreless in his first NBL game.

In December 2016 Tolovae suffered a injury during a practice match between the up and coming Sydney Kings players and the NSW Under 20s squad. The injury would see him miss the remainder of the 2016/17 season. He would be replaced by William McDowell-White whom the Kings signed as a development player.

Tolovae joined the Otago Nuggets for the 2014 New Zealand NBL season, playing his first season in New Zealand and averaging 5.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.5 assists across 15 games.

Tolovae moved to the Canterbury Rams for the 2015 New Zealand NBL season and averaged 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game.

He changed teams again for the 2016 New Zealand NBL season with the Taranaki Airs, playing 18 games and averaging 7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per contest.

In 2017, Tolovae joined the Hawkes Bay Hawks for the New Zealand NBL season and averaged 13.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists across 18 games.

Tolovae returned to the Canterbury Rams for the 2018 New Zealand NBL season, starting every game and averaging 13.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists across 18 appearances.

During the 2018–19 season, Tolovae played in Norway for Gimle BBK in the BLNO, where he averaged 16 points and 5 rebounds per game, and was credited with helping lift the club from the bottom of the league to first place within a season of his arrival while sharing the roster with teammates including Milovan Savic, Eivind Lamo, Morten Osland, and Sigurd Lorange.

In January 2019, Tolovae was announced as the first signing for new Canterbury Rams head coach Mick Downer for the 2019 New Zealand NBL season, and he returned to New Zealand after the conclusion of the Norway season in early April, averaging 6.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists across 18 games for the Rams.

COLLEGE

Tolovae played college basketball at Virginia University of Lynchburg during the 2012–13 season, a schedule that included USCAA competition and games against NCAA programs, with his name also appearing in college records as “Tony Talavae.”

In the 2012–13 season opener on November 10, 2012, Virginia University of Lynchburg defeated Pfeiffer University 79–72 in the Best Western of Albemarle Highway 52 Shootout, and Tolovae finished with 10 points as the Dragons closed the game by making their final eight free throws in the last 50 seconds while recording eight blocks and 14 steals as a team in the win.

Virginia University of Lynchburg later played Daemen College on January 4, 2013 at the Ave Maria Classic in Ave Maria, Florida, and Tolovae started and logged 23 minutes in a 88–65 loss, scoring 6 points on 3-for-4 shooting while collecting 3 rebounds, committing 3 turnovers, and blocking 1 shot.

Across the NCAA-tracked portion of his 2012–13 season, Tolovae appeared in 2 games and averaged 1.5 points and 0.5 rebounds in 10.0 minutes per game, with a 25.0 field-goal percentage and a 50.0 three-point percentage in the available stat record.

During that same season, Virginia University of Lynchburg was ranked as high as 14th in USCAA Division I coverage, and Tolovae’s documented single-game highs included a 23-point performance in a win over Bluefield in results coverage from that campaign.
