COLLEGE

Mickell Gladness played college basketball at Lawson State Community College during the 2004–05 season before transferring to Alabama A&M, where he competed from 2005–06 through 2007–08 and played in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

In his first and only season playing basketball for Lawson State Community College, Gladness averaged modest numbers with 3.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.

He transferred to Alabama A&M in 2005 where he played out the remaining three years of his college eligibility. At Alabama A&M, Gladness majored in business management.

As a true sophomore at Alabama A&M in 2005–06, he appeared in 26 games and was credited with 77 total blocked shots, while season stat lines commonly list him at 3.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game in 19.8 minutes per contest, with 24 starts and shooting 44.3% from the field while making 64.3% of his free throws.

Gladness’ national breakout came as a junior in 2006–07, when he played 30 games (24 starts) and led NCAA Division I in blocks at 6.3 per game, with an adjusted per-40 minutes rate of 7.9 blocks, while also averaging 7.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in 29.2 minutes per night and finishing the year with a 43.1% field-goal mark and 61.5% free-throw shooting.

On February 24, 2007, he set the NCAA Division I single-game record with 16 blocks against Texas Southern in a 79–73 win, adding 13 rebounds and seven points, while Alabama A&M recorded 21 team blocks to tie the NCAA team record for blocks in a game.

Two nights later on February 26, 2007, Gladness followed the record performance with 13 blocks against Prairie View A&M in an 86–66 victory, and he also scored 13 points in that game to pair his shot-blocking with a double-figure scoring night.

During the 2006–07 season he also had notable conference moments such as Alabama A&M’s January 13, 2007 rivalry win over Alabama State, when he finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks in a 61–55 result.

As a senior in 2007–08, his blocks per game dipped to 4.5, but he produced his strongest overall stat season, commonly listed at 10.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 4.5 blocks per game across 29 games while playing 30.6 minutes per contest, shooting 45.2% from the field and 70.1% at the line, and he closed his Division I career with 396 blocked shots across three seasons at Alabama A&M.

His 2007–08 season included multiple high-impact defensive games, including January 26, 2008 at Southern where he posted 19 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks for his second double-double of the season, and March 6, 2008 versus Jackson State when he finished one block and one rebound shy of a double-double with nine blocks and nine rebounds while tracking toward his seventh double-double of the year.

Across his final two seasons at Alabama A&M, Gladness earned first-team All-SWAC recognition in both 2007 and 2008, was named SWAC Defensive Player of the Year in each of those seasons, and his 2006–07 campaign included the national blocks-per-game lead along with the NCAA Division I single-game blocks record that still defines his college résumé.
