NBL EXPERIENCE

Jaye Crockett made his NBL debut with the South East Melbourne Phoenix at 28 years of age. He scored four points in his first game.

In 2019, Crockett was signed as a replacement player by the South East Melbourne Phoenix after import Tai Wesley was injured in the opening game of the season.

Following their Round 1 victory, the Phoenix would keep it rolling, knocking over the Bullets (113-93) and the Hawks (106-102) at home, tipping off their inaugural season with a handsome 3-0 record. Despite the Phoenix taking home victories against relatively good team’s, their first real challenge came in Round 4, where they would play their first away game against Perth. Although the Wildcats’ star duo of Bryce Cotton (16 points) and Terrico White (17 points) started poorly, Perth delivered South East Melbourne their first loss (79-110), ending their season-opening winning streak.

After their trouncing in Western Australia, victories would become a rarity. The Phoenix would go down to the likes of the 36ers, the Kings and twice to United, and after coming into the mid-way point of the season, the Phoenix was the definition of average at this point.

Sitting just outside the top four with a record of six wins and six losses. It was also around this time the Phoenix chose to move on from import Devondrick Walker (7.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists), who, after suffering a fracture in his left foot playing in a Perth pre-season game two years earlier, wasn’t able to deliver the production he was able to beforehand. Keith Benson (5.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks) was signed as his replacement and thought he was a much bigger body, wasn’t able to add much more to the stat sheet.

While South East Melbourne were forced to rely on Creek (20.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.2 steals) and star import John Roberson (20.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists), the next ten rounds would prove to be anything but smooth.

Across the next 16 matchups for South East Melbourne they would go on to accumulate a lacklustre 3 wins and 13 losses, while also finishing their campaign on a eight-game losing streak. With 20 rounds of basketball completed, the Phoenix (9-19) would finish second last.

Crockett would see action in 9 games, averaging 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 0.9 assists before he was released, making way for the returning Wesley.

Jaye Crockett played one season in the NBL. He averaged 8.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1 assists in 9 NBL games.

COLLEGE

Jaye Crockett played four NCAA seasons at Texas Tech from 2010–11 through 2013–14, appearing in 125 games with 42 starts and finishing his Red Raiders career as an all-conference forward who earned Big 12 All-Academic second team honours in 2012, All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in 2013, and third-team All-Big 12 in 2014.

Across his college career, Crockett averaged 9.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game and closed with career totals of 1,212 points, 670 rebounds, 111 assists, 106 steals, and 65 blocks, becoming one of the few players in Texas Tech history credited with reaching 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 100 assists, and 100 steals.

As a redshirt freshman in 2010–11, Crockett played in all 32 games and averaged 4.8 points and 3.0 rebounds, highlighted by a career-high 14 points against North Texas, a double-double versus Delaware State (10 points, 10 rebounds), and a career-high five assists in his collegiate debut against Louisiana-Monroe.

In 2011–12, he took on a major sixth-man role, playing in 30 straight games after missing the season opener and averaging 8.8 points and 5.7 rebounds while earning Big 12 All-Academic second team recognition and landing on both the fall and spring Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Crockett’s sophomore season included a career-high 19 points at Texas A&M on January 14, 2012, plus multiple double-doubles such as 14 points and 10 rebounds at Oklahoma, 11 points and 11 rebounds at Missouri, 16 points and 14 rebounds against Oklahoma State, and 12 points and 11 rebounds versus Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship.

He broke through as a junior in 2012–13, earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention from the league coaches while being named Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year by College Hoops Daily, and he was also recognised as Big 12 Player of the Week on December 31 after posting 20 points and 14 rebounds against North Carolina A&T.

During that 2012–13 campaign, Crockett recorded four 20-point games, produced eight double-doubles, and matched his then career-high with 22 points in multiple games including against Omaha and Alabama, with his season also featuring consecutive double-doubles against Omaha (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Grambling State (17 points, 14 rebounds).

As a senior in 2013–14, Crockett shifted into a more perimeter-oriented wing role and capped his college career with third-team All-Big 12 honours, while also receiving additional postseason recognition such as Honorable Mention All-Big 12 by the Associated Press and being named to an All-District team, alongside major academic recognition including First Team Academic All-Big 12 and the conference’s Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award.

His senior season production included averages of 13.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 52.1 percent from the field, and he finished the year with 426 points, which Texas Tech noted as the most points in a season by a Red Raider since 2009–10.

Crockett’s top individual scoring game at Texas Tech was a career-high 23 points with 11 rebounds at Iowa State, and he closed the regular season with 22 points and 10 rebounds against Texas to record his 18th career double-double.

Across his progression at Texas Tech, his season point totals climbed each year from 153 as a freshman to 265 as a sophomore, 368 as a junior, and 426 as a senior, reflecting steady year-to-year growth into a primary scoring option by his final season.

Crockett’s academic résumé included being listed by the Big 12 among Academic All-Big 12 men’s basketball honorees in 2014, with the league noting he was nominated with a 4.00 grade point average, reinforcing the academic side of his profile alongside his All-Big 12 on-court recognition.

Five to ten years ago, if an Australian headed to Japan, it was typically because of not making NBL roster spots. Players like Venky Jois, Daniel Dillon and Rhys Vague fit this profile.
