NBL EXPERIENCE
Dujuan Wiley made his NBL debut with the Townsville Crocodiles on 21/10/2000. He scored 12 points in his first game.
Ian Stacker entered 2000/01 with the nucleus that had delivered Townsville’s maiden playoff berth, retaining Robert Rose, Sam MacKinnon, Pat Reidy, Mike Kelly, Andrew Goodwin, Brad Davidson, Peter Crawford and David Pennisi, and bringing in Dujuan Wiley to replace Ben Knight (to Cairns), the team’s lone departure.
Townsville launched by routing Queensland rivals Cairns at The Swamp (120–85), Robert Rose (13 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists) controlling the tempo and Andrew Goodwin (24 points and 8 rebounds) putting points on the board as the Crocs signalled intent from the jump.
The early momentum carried to 4–1 before a rougher patch—road losses at Adelaide (105–121) and Perth (108–121), the latter featuring a Rose triple-double (22 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists)—plus a two-game stumble against Victoria, saw them fall to a record of 5–4 . Soon after, severe bone bruising ended Sam MacKinnon’s year at 16 games despite averages of (17.4 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.5 steals, 1.1 blocks), resulting in the decision to replace Wiley (7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.9 blocks). In February, Townsville released the import, bringing in David Hinton (9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds)—to open the floor, lift tempo and keep size on the glass without sacrificing spacing.
After Wiley’s exit, Hinton’s mid-season inclusion preceded an eleven-game surge and a 22–6 regular-season finish, with the rebalanced rotation powering a run through Sydney and Victoria to a Grand Final meeting with Wollongong that the Hawks edged 2–1, marking the league’s first title for a NSW club.
