COLLEGE

Alex Ducas played five seasons at Saint Mary’s from 2019–20 to 2023–24, finishing as one of the most prolific three-point shooters in program history with 278 made threes on 684 attempts, while scoring 1,353 points (14th in program history) across a school-record 150 games with 123 starts.

Ducas debuted as a freshman in 2019–20, appearing in 33 games with 11 starts while averaging 3.6 points in 15.2 minutes, and he hit a three in his first college game against Wisconsin before posting a season-high 16 points and eight rebounds versus Seattle on December 28.

His sophomore season in 2020–21 was disrupted by an ankle injury, limiting him to 14 games and nine starts, though he still flashed his ceiling with a career-high 25 points against South Dakota State on November 27 and a career-high 10 rebounds against Northern Iowa (9 points, 10 boards) early in the year.

Ducas broke through as a full-time starter in 2021–22, starting all 34 games and setting career highs at the time with 10.3 points per game in 29.8 minutes, including a 25-point game against Loyola Marymount on February 5, and he was named WCC Player of the Week on January 24 before earning All-WCC Second Team honours.

As a senior in 2022–23, he started all 35 games and produced 12.5 points per game while drilling 87 three-pointers at 41.1 percent, with those 87 makes ranking as the fourth-most in a single season in Saint Mary’s history, and he was also named All-WCC Honorable Mention and selected to the WCC All-Tournament Team after the Gaels’ runner-up conference tournament finish.

That 2022–23 run included several major markers, with Ducas tying his career-high with 25 points against New Mexico on November 30, reaching 1,000 career points in Saint Mary’s NCAA Tournament win over VCU, and delivering 17 points plus a career-best five steals in that VCU game, which was noted by the program as the most steals in an NCAA Tournament game in Gaels history.

Returning as a fifth-year senior in 2023–24, Ducas again started every game and averaged 9.9 points while shooting 45.3 percent from the field and a team-best 43.8 percent from three, knocking down 81 triples (ninth-most in a season in program history and second-most in the WCC) and earning All-WCC Second Team recognition for the second time in his career.

In the biggest moments of 2023–24, Ducas exploded for 21 points in the WCC Tournament semifinals against Santa Clara, hitting seven threes and tying the program record with six made threes in a single half, then later capped the year as a two-time WCC All-Tournament Team selection as Saint Mary’s won the 2024 WCC Tournament title.

By the end of his Saint Mary’s career, Ducas also owned multiple program record-book entries, including being the only Gael credited by the school with 80+ made threes in back-to-back seasons (87 in 2022–23 and 81 in 2023–24), while ranking top-two all-time at SMC in both three-pointers made (278) and three-pointers attempted (684).

    • Why Newcastle’s NBL Return Is Closer Than You Think

The conversation around NBL expansion has intensified in recent years, with the league publicly confirming discussions with potential markets such as Canberra, the Gold Coast, and Darwin. However, one city that continues to quietly build momentum as a realistic candidate for a future franchise is Newcastle. While it may not always dominate the expansion headlines, the pieces required for an NBL return are slowly aligning, and according to former owner of the Illawarra Hawks, Dorry Kordahi, the push for a Newcastle team is very real.…

    • Japan’s Emergence as a Major Destination for Australian Basketball Talent

Five to ten years ago, if an Australian headed to Japan, it was typically because of not making NBL roster spots. Players like Venky Jois, Daniel Dillon and Rhys Vague fit this profile.
